The San Diego County Optometric Society Newsletters

Last Friday I had the honor of teaming up with the VSP Mobile Eye Clinic and the San Diego Executive Lions Club to provide exams and glasses to several dozen underprivileged kids in the San Diego South Bay School District.  This ongoing project began last year under the leadership of our past president Eric White and was recognized by the California Optometric Association as the project of the year.

So, what do you do for a living?  How many times have we been asked this question?  In a world that seeks to label us by our occupation, how we answer this question can shed some light on how we view our chosen profession.

Optometry is a legislated profession”.  We’ve all heard this statement before, but do we really understand and appreciate what it means?   Are we aware of how laws and regulations at both the state and federal levels define our scope of practice, licensing requirements, and patient access to care?

Last month I shared with you the importance of society membership to protect and advance our profession.  Together with the California Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association, we collaborate and strategize on how to best serve our members.

On behalf of the San Diego County Optometric Society Board, I would like to wish all of you a most Happy New Year!  May you and your loved ones be blessed with good health and prosperity in 2025.

It’s hard to believe it’s already November and the year is almost over. What happened to March, let alone summer? I’m ready for some classic San Diego winter weather, where the temperature dips into the 60s… brr! It’s been another fantastic month for the San Diego Optometric Society.

My great-grandmother always told me, "You know you're getting old when time flies by." Boy, is time flying by—now my kids are saying the same. Life is just moving too fast! The SDCOS is in full swing and keeping really busy. We have just one CE left on Thursday, November 14th, at West Pac. The speaker is Dooran Spencer, MD, on Uveitis and Ocular Inflammation. The fun starts at 6 p.m.

What an incredible month! This has truly been a memorable August for many reasons. The August President’s message covered a couple of society projects we had underway. If you missed them, bummer but for you but they will be back. Stand Down San Diego has come and gone

The San Diego sun is definitely upon us and it is wonderful summer.   On Thursday July 18th Dr Kellie Satterfield spoke on lumps, bumps and lesions.  She did an amazing job...

We have made it halfway through 2024. Wow, is this year flying by! It’s flying because there is so much going on at SDCOS that it’s making our heads spin. We have an incredible society thanks to the hard work of our board and all the members—keep it up!
