The Lions Optometric Vision Clinic (LOVC) was founded in 1963 as a service project supported by the Lions Clubs of San Diego County. Its mission has remained the same for over 60 years: to provide quality vision care to individuals in our community who cannot otherwise afford it.
Since its founding, the LOVC has provided eyeglasses to more than 10,000 individuals, and this vital work is made possible by the dedication of volunteer Lions and members of the San Diego County Optometric Society. In August 2000, the LOVC moved into its current home on the third floor of the Blind Community Center on Upas Street. The clinic features two equipped exam rooms, optical instruments, and diagnostic equipment made possible through the generosity of the San Diego County Optometric Society, Lions Clubs of District 4L6, individual donors, and local charitable organizations through grants.
The clinic is staffed by an Optician, volunteers from various organizations, and volunteer Optometrists from the San Diego County Optometric Society that generously donate their professional expertise, providing comprehensive services:
Eye exams for glasses
Glaucoma and eye health screenings
Referrals for specialized care
Fitting and dispensing prescription glasses
The need for LOVC’s services has never been greater. Typically, more than 50 individuals are waiting for care - people who often “fall through the cracks” because they do not qualify for public assistance yet cannot afford private care. Many have no health coverage at all.
The LOVC is seeking volunteer Optometrists to join our mission. The clinic is open Monday through Friday mornings, with volunteer shifts coordinated and scheduled for half days (9 am - 12 pm), weekday evenings (6 - 8 pm), and weekends (9 am - 12 pm) to minimize time away from private practice.
Your time and expertise change lives by helping children succeed in school, enabling adults to work, and preserving independence for seniors.
Volunteering for 1 morning entitles SDCOS members to attend a 5 hour CE course for FREE!! (Up to 2 per year)
Non-Members $70 off, choice of 2 or 5 hour CE. Maximum of 2 CE's per year.
Congratulations for the years of service to our community in the past and into the future.
On Sunday, June 2nd, 2019, the Lions Optometric Vision Clinic held an open house to introduce prospective doctors to the clinic and thank current volunteers. There was a tour of the clinic, live music and raffle prizes. The open house raised ~$200 to support the clinic, thank you to everyone who participated! If you have any questions about the clinic or are interested in volunteering, please call us (619-298-5273), email us (clinic@sdlovc.org) or visit our website (https://www.lovc.org). We also have several fundraisers coming up, including the SDCOS golf tournament and at restaurants such as BJ’s Pizza and Blaze Pizza; see our website for the more details.
