As I reflect back on the past 5 years that I have been a part of the San Diego County Optometric Society, I definitely have to say that 2015 has by far been the best! Although being president of one of the finest optometric societies in the county is a huge commitment, I feel like I have grown as a leader and learned so much more about our profession this year than I ever could have imagined. When I first moved to San Diego to become a resident at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla, I had no idea of what the future held for me in San Diego. Luckily, Dr. Dawn Pewitt was there to help me every step of the way, whether it was guiding me with complicated patients, or encouraging me to be active in the society. I am very grateful to have had such an amazing mentor and I want to personally thank her for her constant inspiration and support! Without her, I probably wouldn’t have taken such a big leadership role so early on in my career, and even though it’s been a challenging road, I would not trade the experiences and relationships I’ve made during this journey for anything.
I also want to give a huge thank you to the 2015 SDCOS Board of Directors. Each of these members has played an instrumental role in the success of our society this year. Without each and every one of these volunteers, we would not have been able to hold all of the events that SDCOS is so proud to offer to our members and the community. Drs. Erin Swift, Allison Pierce, Ketan Bakriwala, Michael Morgan, Eric White, Dawn Pewitt, Dick Skay, Dave Sherman, Andrew Fasciani, Paul Lavin, Nickolet Boermans, Lucia Millet, Susan Cervantes, Bob Meisel, Melody Tavakoli, Jack Anthony, Doug Osborne, Matt Geller, Joe Garvin, Clare Kosters, Stephanie Le, Julia Castranova and Byron Newman, thank you for volunteering so much of your time and energy to the society! You have all done such an amazing job this year and I am so proud to be able to work with you all. I appreciate everything that you do for the society and all of the hard work you put in to ensure the advancement of our great profession! Lastly, we all can attest to the amazing job that our administration assistant, Nancy-Jo Sinkiewicz has done for SDCOS for many, many years. Your dedication to the society is invaluable!
Lastly, as a celebration of the great work that the society has done this year, we invite you all to join us for the SDCOS Annual Holiday Party. It will be held at the W Hotel Downtown San Diego on Saturday December 5th. Social hour will begin at 6:00pm and will proceed to dinner at 7:00pm. The featured entertainment for the evening will be local singer/songwriter and guitarist, Collin Elliot. Collin fronted the popular Los Angeles band “The Surrender” for several years before settling back down in San Diego to continue work on his solo career. His live music is second-to-none, and his wide knowledge of popular music across the generations ensures a nonstop party on the dance floor!
As I pass along the gavel to our next president, Dr. Allison Pierce, it is a very bittersweet feeling. Again, 2015 has been an awesome year and I am very thankful that the membership has given me the opportunity to serve them. I want to wish Dr. Pierce the best of luck next year and I am looking forward to an exciting 2016!
