January 2017

I hope everyone had an exciting holiday season with their loved ones and I wish you success in the coming year.  Since becoming an active member, I have gained so much professionally and personally through the San Diego County Optometric Society and am honored to have the opportunity to give back and serve as your new president in 2017.  We have an excellent group of doctors on our Board and I am looking forward to what this coming year will bring!

Thank you to Dr. Allison Pierce Becker for your leadership as president in 2016.  With all the thoughtful changes and leadership responsibilities you’ve undertaken since joining the board, it’s no wonder you are our 2016 “Young Optometrist of the Year.” Likewise, congratulations to Dr. David Geffen, our 2016 “Optometrist of the Year”.  He has dedicated countless hours not just engaging our local members, but optometrists throughout the U.S. with informative lectures, articles, research, and presentations on topics related to practice management, Contact Lens updates, and knowledge in the ever-changing role of the peri-optometric surgical care. We also honor all of the executive board members on years of dedicated service to our local society as well as the Optometric profession as a whole. We are lucky to have such amazing doctors and innovators in our community!

I am committed to maintaining our legacy as one of the best optometric societies in the country.  In addition to being one of the largest in California, we are also one of the most active. In fact, through my years of working with the SDCOS, I’ve realized that our local society does as much as some statewide societies! For example, we provide numerous continuing education opportunities to our members, including six 2-hour and three 5-hour CE meetings.  We also have many volunteer outreach programs which allow our members to be active and give back to the community, including our Lions Optometric Vision Clinic and Monarch School Screenings. Moreover, you can join us for our annual Legislative Day in Sacramento when we come together to encourage our state senators and congressman to support our profession.  Your presence always makes a difference. I would encourage all of you to take advantage of these programs, which not only make for an incredibly rewarding experience, but also show our dedication as a profession to the San Diego area.

As your SDCOS president, I promise to work hard to provide you with another great year of education, resources to enrich yourself and your practice, and opportunities to network with other doctors and vendors.  I will make myself available for any questions, comments, and ideas so our society can continue to grow and thrive.  I am confident that together we will have an amazing year!
