SDCOS WALK RAISES BIG FUNDS TO STOP DIABETES

Twenty-seven society members, friends and staff raised over $5,000 as they walked in the STEP OUT San Diego walk to fight diabetes. The walkers topped their goal and were among the leaders in the fund raiser held on October 24, 2010 and sponsored by the American Diabetes Assn. Most of the money raised was by donations from friends and family, some betting, perhaps, that they couldn’t really walk that 3+ mile distance. The 5K walk along the beautiful DeAnza Cove in Mission Bay, San Diego, attracted thousands of walkers (and a few runners) with many team groups. The SDCOS team sported purple T-shirts, created by Craig Hansen and the Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute, and was a stand-out.

Threatened with rain, the event proceeded in off and on sunshine, warming up as the morning moved along with no rain.

The co-captains for the SDCOS team were David Sherman, OD, and Craig Hansen. Many of the doctors on the team were members of the board of directors of the society, including David Sherman, Jack Anthony, Lisa Weiss, Byron Y. Newman, Barbara Smith, Dawn Pewitt, and Carrie Haare Turley. There were also two dogs walking with us on our team. Many booths lined the registration area, offering items about health and welfare offering many token gifts.

With Diabetes a major cause of blindness, the optometry society members are willing supporters of the American Diabetes Association’s goal to wipe out diabetes.
